What ammo are people having trouble finding?

It seems that I have seen a few posts here and there about certain ammo being harder to find. If anyone wants to post here what they are trying to source and what they normally pay for it (please be as specific as possible), I will be glad to check the stores around here when I go into town.

Brass cased 7.62x39 is almost like finding water in the desert.

Fiochii is the brand that I like but as soon as someone gets it it may last about 2 days in stock.

.223, 7.62X39, and .308 are all pretty tight. You can still find some but not the big amounts at good prices that used to be available. The cheap surplus 7.62X54R is all gone in my area also.

Re: What ammo are people having trouble finding?

High grade .380 ACP +P HP (>95gr) can be very hard to find A) In Stock or B) At Affordable Prices.
Brands include Hornady XTP and Remington Golden Saber.

Re: What ammo are people having trouble finding?

7.62x39mm is going for $6 per box of Wolf when you can find it.

It seems everyone is out of the cheap .223 rounds and I don't want to pay $12+ for a box of 20.

There's another gun show this weekend in my area, so I'll check on the Ammo prices and probably buy some too.

Only ammo I'm looking for............ All the rest seems to be in good supply. LOL

No, just the ammo for my new hunting rifle at the shop where I purchased it, They didn't have anything in .308 hunting ammo.

So 7.62x39 seems to be a common one...lets concentrate on that for the moment and let me know what brands people want, quantity in the box, decent price, and any other specifics I need to know and I will check today or tomorrow when I go to the gun shop.

Seriously, I don't understand why brass cased is so important to you.

There is plenty of '39' ammo out there and I have my share. Believe me I'm not policing brass if I survive a encounter, never mind reloading it. Buy 10 - 1,000 round cases and be done with it.

Just my .02$

Buy the steel-cased Wolf Military Classic Hollow Point 7.62x39 available from Ammoman for $249 per 1000 rounds delivered...Good stuff. It is a more effective round than any FMJ since the hollow point bullet actually fragments on impact...

I've shot thousands of that precise round and they feed fine and make the receiving target go splooey like a proper 7.62X39 oughtta. It's dirty but you wouldn't shoot cleaner ammo and not clean up later, anyway, right?

As far as ammo goes, it seems where I live there is still supply, but the prices have gone up. What hasn't gone up will go up as the wholesalers raise their prices.

Ok just got back from the local wallyworld and found these:

7.62 x 39 123gr Remington UMC (green and white box) 20 round box $14.47 - 2 available
7.62 x 39 123gr Remington (white and red box) 40 round "value pak" $27.97 - 2 or 3 available

Not sure if anyone is interested but I would gladly pick them up if someone wants me to and then we can arrange shipping.

Anybody know where I can find some .223 Winchester Super Short Magnum?

JK... I actually have a box of this, and I don't even have a gun it works in.

Maybe I can barter it later on...

Got plenty of ammo here in CA, mostly cuz you're not allowed to have guns, so no one buys it.

Someone that was picking me up some .223 accidentally bought this (didn't know better)... I think Browning used to chamber their A-Bolt for this round, but they had to chrome the barrels to handle it. Apparently the 45 grain bullet has a muzzle velocity of 4350 fps - can you say "barrel burner"? WOW!

That's one hot .22...

I've read that the guns chambered for that round are only good for about 2,000 rounds before the barrel is ruined. 5.56 or even standard .223 is plenty fast enough for me.

If you are looking for hollow point handgun calibers at good prices Georgia Arms loads some real nice ammo:

http://georgia-arms.com

Their rifle rounds are pretty expensive as it seems they load more toward the premium hunting type ammo for rifles.

I've fired .357 Mag and .44 Mag (both Gold Dot Hollow points) from Georgia Arms and they were both really nice.

Cause AK's and variants were designed to use steel cases. The chambers are tapered to allow for easy extraction.

I've probably been shooting longer than you've been alive, so if you feel it necessary to have a personal relationship with your "gun" then get after it. Do you only use certain metallurgy nails with your hammer?

Re: What ammo are people having trouble finding?

If you are shooting an AK or SKS, please use steel cased ammo. It works perfectly. No reason to pay twice as much for brass case.

StrawMan=Corporation 11-25-2008 09:05 PM

Re: What ammo are people having trouble finding?

I agree 100% as anyone that has several thousand dollars into their rifle would not use steel cased ammunition, It would wear on the action worse than brass a generally softer material.

IMO this is just common sense, Something that is lacking in a lot of people these days.

Correct but this is the exception to the rule, You generally dont pay 3500.00 + for a SKS or AK rifle.

Kalashnikovs and Simonovs are designed to use mil-spec, hard-primered, steel-cased ammo.

It might be that some of us that don't get the latest magazines or don't visit that many gun boards, just never heard of the Tikka before. This is not the first time I've heard of them, just not ever seen one in a gun shop or show that I know of.

BTW, I'm having a little difficulty finding much in the way of .308 hunting ammo here in shotgun country. Not sure why, but most other calibers of common rifle ammo seems to be available if only in short supply.

Went to Walmart last night , talked to the head person in sporting goods there .She said they were not in the stores to stop selling ammo in jan , but , yes always a but . She did say to buy anything I wanted real soon , said she had received a notice from corporate that after january the retail prices on the ammo would be going up by %500 They did have 12ga 00 buckshot all lengths $4.95 / box but no 20ga 00 buckshot. There was no 30-06 no 308 no 223 , she said she was personally stocked up already on everything she needed .

Side note , a guy came to the ammo case looking for bullets for his new gun , said the guy he bought it from 30 min ago told him he needed bullets marked with a 9 and 2 m's , said this was his first gun he had ever even touched but knew he was going to need it real soon .

So its true that Walmart is going to let the hammer fall on ammo.

Wow
.

Well that pretty much seals it......... everybody with a lick of sense better go hog wild on whatever ammo they need.

Side note: I went to the range yesterday saw a Older fellow holding a revoler talking with the clerk didnt have a clue how to use it or which brands have a good name but was going to leave with SOMETHING THAT DAY ...... I saw another that didnt even know how to pronounce the name SAIGA but was looking hard for it.

Just further confirmation Come January 20th.

ITS ON.

My favorite local gun shop is now completely out of 7.62x39. Grrrrrrrrrr!!!

RE: Wallyworld. Still afloat, can you clarify: 500%? That's a 5 and two 0's, correct? So a 550-round box of bulk .22 which cost @ $13 will soon be $65? Or a 100-round of bulk 9 mm will go from $21/box to $105?

I really, really, really hope you are mistaken.

Ohioarmed , neighbor to my north , yes that was a 5 with 2 0s according to her.
I just report the news , I don't make it . I hope she is wrong also but that is what she told me was in the memo from corporate .She believed it enough that she said she already stocked up on what she needed .She did not specify if it was across the board or just centerfire ammo, so I assume it's everything .

In 7.62x39, Wolf and other cheap Russian types seem to be impossible to find. Tried putting in orders on several sites and it's unavailable until the end of January. On the other hand, did find some Lapua available @ $34.99 per box of 30 and Fiocchi @ $11.99 per box of 20 (midwayusa). So it's either grab the Lapua & Fiocchi now or wait two months—or longer—for the Wolf. I opted for the former.

So if Wallyworld, which is about as cheap as you can get, is planning on jacking ammo 500%, wouldn't there be other retailers and distributors planning to do the same? I'm not doubting what you report your friend saying, but that just seems like an over the top jump. Truly staggering.

Has anybody else heard similar reports?

Lt. Dan, I am pretty well stocked in 308 so I haven't been shopping since before the election. I have no idea what's out there now. Also (and I don't think you meant this, but just in case) I am not a gun snob, I was looking for a snip rifle and my more educated friends steered me towards the tikka. It was damn expensive, but worth it IMHO. I think there's a lot more efficient ways to dial long distance, but it's a fine machine.

Best of luck in your ammo hunting, I think the onlines are the only way to go right now. Ammoman, etc.

Mouse, I've thousands of rounds of 7.62x51 NATO ammo in FMJ, what I've been looking for are what I consider amply .308 hunting rounds for big game. I've found a little but extremely expensive. Even the bullets for rolling my own are hard to find locally and expensive.

On the other hand, did find some Lapua available @ $34.99 per box of 30 and Fiocchi @ $11.99 per box of 20 (midwayusa). So it's either grab the Lapua & Fiocchi now or wait two monthsor longerfor the Wolf. I opted for the former.

Try them........ the 660 Rd Ammo can of HP Wolf ( CALL TOMMAROW ASAP)

http://www.classicarms.us/

You can also try ATG....... the wait is going to kill you but you should have your stuff before December is finished. Plus there verification process for ammo ship is easy (none of the faxing a DL to people you dont know)

I've got some Wolf but in the future I'm going to stay away from it for a number of reasons:
1. It's dirty.
2. You can't reload it (not that I do).
3. Seems more prone to misfires (at least the new grey stuff vs. the old green). Even one misfire in 100 can cost you your life.

Winchester, Federal and Remington are all still pretty available so I'll stick with those as well as the Fiocchi & Lapua.

There was talk going around of a 500% increase in the Federal tax on ammo (NOT the price of ammo - the tax.) That hasn't been signed, hasn't passed congress, and certainly won't be taking effect on Jan 1. I think she got confused.

That doesn't mean you should stop buying ammo though :signs1:

Buy all means pick up the higher quality stuff for yourself........ but I think its a good idea to have some ammo on hand that you wont mind using for barter or charity.

Wolf fits the bill nicely.

Given how much Walmart is in bed with the Feds, and is also the largest retailer in the country, I wouldn't be surprised to hear of them getting a "heads up" so they can prepare for this and don't take a hit when it goes into effect.

Re: What ammo are people having trouble finding?

It has been roughly a month since the last post on here, so I thought maybe it would be a good time for updates. I only have two handguns S&W 40 semiauto and .357 Magnum and so far I have been able to pick up ammo without much difficutly. What are people having trouble finding these days?

And if we set up something where we try to help each other out, is it legal for private individuals to ship ammo across state lines? I have no idea...

What's a good price? If I find some here, is it legal for me to ship across state lines?
